2016 Reunion of Upcountry Families March 10-12

CENTRAL, S.C. – The public is invited to the Reunion of Upcountry Families March 10-12.

The free event will include cemetery tours, workshopsdevoted to family history and a large display of photos and other items from local families of the Old Pendleton District, which became present-day Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties.

The Reunion of Upcountry Families will kick off March 10 at Hampton Memorial Library, 304 Biltmore Rd. in Easley. Presentations willinclude “Heritage Quest and Revolutionary War Records” by Quintell Walker of Hampton Memorial Library; “Proving Your Revolutionary War Ancestor with DAR Resources” by the Fort Prince George DAR Chapter; and “All You Ever Wanted to Know About the Sons of the American Revolution.” For details, contact the library at (864) 850-7077.

Friday, March 11 will start with tours of McKinney Chapel, 2254 Cleo Chapman Hwy., Sunset at 10 a.m. (Note that there is a gate in theroad before you get there; tell them you’re visiting McKinney Chapel), Nimmons-Anderson Cemetery and Eastatoe Valley, and a tour of Old Pickens Church and cemetery at 2 p.m. Also, research centers will be open from 1 – 4 p.m.: Clayton Family Research Center, Southern Wesleyan University; Anderson Genealogical Library; and Pendleton District Commission. There will also betours of Collins Ole Towne, 228 Lawton Rd. in Central starting at 5 p.m., dinner at Collins Ole Towne at 6 p.m., and a presentation “Early Trails and Roads of the Upcountry, Part 2” by local author and outdoorsman Dennis Chastain at 7 p.m. The dinner will cost $20.

On Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Southern Wesleyan University will host historic displays from area families as well as local genealogical and historical associations in The Founders, located on the lower level of the University Dining Commons building. There will also be tours of the Faith Clayton Family Research Center, located on the lower level of Rickman Library on the SWU campus. There will also be presentations about “Procuring Land in South Carolina” with Dr. A.B. Pruitt and “Finding your Revolutionary War Ancestors,” presented by genealogist Sue Dillon of Carmel, Ind.

Tables are still available for families whose heritage goes back to the days of the Old Pendleton District to display family photos, family Bibles and other historical memorabilia. There is a $20 cost to reserve a table, payable to the Central Heritage Society, 416 Church St., Central, SC  29630.

Group tables are also still available to organizations that will enhance or contribute to genealogical research or information in the Upcountry. Examples of groups include Pickens County Library, Pickens County Genealogical Society, SAR, DAR, UDC, SCV, etc. For details or to reserve a group table, contact Brenda Meyer at [email protected].

Finally, a play titled “The Reconstruction of Manse Jolly” will take place in Liberty at the Liberty Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12 and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 13. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door.

The Reunion of Upcountry Families is sponsored by the Birchwood Center for Arts and Folklife, along with Southern Wesleyan University, the Faith Clayton Family Research Center, the Old Pendleton District Genealogical Society, the Pickens County Historical Society, the Pickens County Museum of Art and History, Anderson Genealogical Society, the Central Heritage Society, the Pendleton District Commission and Pickens County Accommodation Tax Grant.
