City gives first look at Town Creek Bike Park
Wednesday, December 3, 2014 Pickens County courier
City of Pickens officials, Ride Garden officials and community members cut the ribbon at the city’s new Town Creek Bike Park during a recent event.
On Nov. 15, the city, in partnership with Ride Garden, hosted a volunteer day at the park to prepare for the opening. The city hosted a ribbon-cutting celebration the following day. The Town Creek Bike Park is located at 545 Sangamo Road.
A grand opening celebration for the park will be held in early Spring 2015.
Town Creek Bike Park hosts a number of features, including:
• 8’ wide paved trail called the “Appalachian Lumber Greenway” that follows most of the existing trail along the historic Appalachian Lumber Company railroad route and provides a multi-use and ADA compliant path between the Pickens Recreation Center and the Playground of Promise
• 4,000’ FlowCoaster
• Berm turn wall rides
• Dirt Jumps
• Earthen Rollers
• Wooden Rollers
• Apex Over-Under Bridges
• Raised Half Log Trails
• Wooden Banked Turns
• Pump Track and Earthen Bowl
• Single Track
The total construction budget for the project was $765,000. The city received a $400,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission and $100,000 grant from the S.C. Recreational Trails Program. The city put in a cash match from the hospitality tax account, which is restricted by state law to only be used on tourism-related activities. The vision of this park is to be a state-of-the-art riding facility that draws riders of all levels from across the Southeast. Construction was completed on the Appalachian Lumber Greenway in July, and the rest of the construction was completed in early November.
