Gathering On Appalachian Life (GOAL)

For the first time,  six different non-profits in Pickens, SC will be hosting the Gathering On Appalachian Life (GOAL). The "base" will be Hagood Community Center (aka Pickens Sr Center) but workshops will also be held at other venues in the Pickens area such as Hagood Mill, Pickens County Museum, etc.  This is a festival/mini-conference including an opening session, 4 hour-long workshop sessions, an Appalachian lunch, and vendor tables/silent auction.  Speakers at the opening session will be Dr Tom Cloer, Dennis Chastain, and Dot Jackson. The workshop sessions will include over 30 interactive workshops and tours on topics such as Moonshining, Primitive Technology and Artifacts, Quilting, Genealogy, the Cherokee Trail, Appalachian Music, Appalachian Dance and Hearthside Cooking.  The lunch will be a "home-cooked" meal of chicken and dumplings, greens, and apple pie/cobbler prepared by our seniors.  If you sign up before Feb 1, the cost is $15 and from Feb 1-27 the cost is $20; lunch is $5.  The six hosting non-profits are Birchwood, Inc., Hagood Community Center, Hagood Mill, Pickens County Historical Society, Pickens Revitalization Assn (PRA), and Preserving Our Southern Appalachian Music (POSAM, supporting Young Appalachian Musicians--YAM).  For more information and/or sign up click here.
